This article is a deep dive into the extraordinary life of Neem Karoli Baba — his roots, miracles, philosophy, ashrams, and the spiritual wave he left behind that continues to wash over hearts worldwide.

Early Life of Neem Karoli Baba

Birth and Family Background

Neem Karoli Baba was born around 1900 (some accounts suggest 1900-1908) in the village of Akbarpur in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, India. His birth name was Lakshman Narayan Sharma. Born into a devout Brahmin family, young Lakshman displayed early signs of spiritual depth. He was calm, inward-looking, and disinterested in the usual desires of the material world.

His father, Durga Prasad Sharma, was a pious and respected man in the village. The spiritual environment of his home perhaps laid the foundation for the boy’s eventual journey into renunciation.

Marriage and Renunciation

Lakshman Narayan Sharma was married at a young age, as was the custom in rural India at the time. However, even after marriage and fatherhood, his spiritual inclinations only grew stronger. One day, without informing his family, he left home — embarking on the journey of a wandering sadhu, a path many saints in Indian spiritual traditions have walked.

He wandered across the country, spending time in temples, forests, and caves — connecting deeply with the divine. His transformation into Neem Karoli Baba was not tied to any formal monastic lineage but was the result of spontaneous realization and grace.

Becoming "Baba" – The Wanderer Saint

The Train Miracle

The name "Neem Karoli Baba" was born from a miraculous incident that occurred in the village of Neem Karoli in Uttar Pradesh. Baba had boarded a train without a ticket. When the conductor discovered this, he had Baba forcibly removed at the next station.

Meditation

Soon after, the train mysteriously wouldn’t start. Engineers and railway officials tried everything, but the engine wouldn’t budge. Eventually, someone suggested bringing the sadhu back. Baba was respectfully invited back on the train, and immediately, the engine roared to life.

Baba Ka Bhandara

This event deeply impacted the railway officials and villagers alike. A local zamindar, who witnessed the event, became a devotee and helped build a small temple for Baba. Thus, the wandering sadhu came to be known as Neem Karoli Baba.

Encounters with Villagers, Kings, and Commoners

Baba never discriminated between a pauper and a prince. His devotees ranged from villagers who brought him fruits to ministers who sat at his feet in awe. His ability to read minds, appear in multiple places at once, and heal the sick attracted thousands, yet he always maintained a humble, childlike demeanor.

Maharajji rarely gave long discourses. His teachings came through his actions — feeding the poor, healing the sick, blessing with silence. People felt their burdens lifted simply by sitting near him. He radiated divine presence.
