Early Life of Sri Jivanti Ma and Spiritual Calling

Sri Jivanti Ma, one of the most devoted disciples of Neem Karoli Baba, was born into a pious Brahmin household. From an early age, she exhibited a deep spiritual inclination that set her apart. Her upbringing in Almora and subsequent move to Nainital were marked by significant moments that foreshadowed her future as a spiritual companion to Siddhi Ma, another renowned devotee of Neem Karoli Baba.

Sri Jivanti Ma and Siddhi Ma shared a remarkable bond akin to the divine loyalty of Lakshman for Sri Ram in the Ramayana. Their shared devotion and protective care for each other created a foundation for their spiritual journey, which was guided and blessed by Neem Karoli Baba himself. Their first darshan of Baba in the house of Sri Ram Sah in Nainital marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the path of seva and spiritual growth.

The Divine Connection of Sri Jivanti Ma with Neem Karoli Baba

Sri Jivanti Ma’s connection with Neem Karoli Baba was profound. From the very first moment she offered pranaam to Baba, he recognized her spiritual greatness. Baba’s words, “She is a great saint. She will feed me,” foreshadowed her pivotal role in preparing his daily prasad at Kainchi Dham. Even while living at home, Jivanti Ma would prepare food with great devotion, offering it to Maharaj-ji’s picture before partaking of it as prasad. This unwavering dedication symbolized her complete surrender and love for her Guru.

Sri Jivanti Ma lived a disciplined life as a schoolteacher, yet her responsibilities extended far beyond. She traveled to Kainchi every day, balancing her household chores with her spiritual duties. Her selfless service became an integral part of the ashram’s daily functioning. Baba’s declaration that she was the “custodian of Kubera’s bhandara” proved true as she ensured that all visitors to the ashram were fed with love and care, regardless of their number.

One remarkable incident involved a Ramayana recitation held at her home. Inspired by her purity and sanctity, devotees chose her house for continuous chanting of the sacred text. On the final day, Maharaj-ji himself arrived unexpectedly, filling the atmosphere with divine energy and joy. This event underscored Sri Jivanti Ma’s role as a bridge between devotees and their Guru.

A Journey Marked by Faith and Courage

The Midnight Pilgrimage to Bhumiadhar

Sri Jivanti Ma’s faith and courage were exemplified during a memorable night when she and Siddhi Ma decided to walk twelve kilometers to Bhumiadhar in the dark to have Baba’s darshan. Despite the dangers of the deserted road, their determination remained unshaken. A mysterious black dog appeared and accompanied them, offering silent protection. Upon reaching Bhumiadhar, they were greeted with love and prasad, reaffirming Baba’s promise that “when you have started on the path to God, proceed, do not stop. He will take care of you.”

The Lesson of Moong Dal

In another instance, Neem Karoli Baba’s playful yet profound nature was evident. Late one night, he asked Sri Jivanti Ma to prepare moong dal and roti for him. Though hesitant at first, she complied, only to learn the next day that a devotee had passed away with his mind fixated on food. Baba explained that eating the food on behalf of the devotee freed him from his earthly desires, allowing him to attain liberation. This incident highlighted the depth of Baba’s compassion and Sri Jivanti Ma’s indispensable role in serving his divine will.
